Why Digital Awareness Matters More Than Ever

Education remains one of the most powerful tools we have to help people recognise scams, AI-generated content, misinformation, and harmful online behaviour.

Why We Need to Talk More About Digital Harm

The reason I chose to work at Digital Resistance is because, at the age of 16, I made a promise to myself that I would do everything I could to stop people from being harmed online after my own personal experiences.

As technology continues to evolve, artificial intelligence is developing in ways that can be both innovative and dangerous. While AI has many positive uses, it is also creating serious concerns, especially through the generation of fake images and realistic content that should not exist. This can be harmful to children, vulnerable individuals, and older generations who may not fully understand the risks and negative impacts of AI.

I have heard many stories from people who have been catfished online by AI-generated identities, as well as concerns about children watching highly realistic AI-created videos that can influence their understanding of reality. AI is also beginning to affect mental health and body image standards. For example, fashion companies and magazines are increasingly using AI-generated models, creating unrealistic and “perfect” beauty standards that promote a false image of healthy bodies and lifestyles.

Online safety

Another issue is that many people are often afraid to speak openly about their online experiences because they worry others may not believe them. Some stories can sound impossible or unreal due to how advanced technology has become, but that does not mean they should be ignored. These conversations are important and need to be taken seriously so people feel safe enough to ask for help and share their experiences without fear of judgement.

I also believe online safety and digital awareness should be taught more widely, especially to younger generations and vulnerable groups. People should understand how to recognise manipulation, misinformation, AI-generated content, scams, and harmful behaviour online. Education is one of the strongest ways to protect people and create a safer digital environment.

These issues are part of the reason why I want to work in this field — to help create safer online spaces, raise awareness about digital harm, and protect people from the growing risks that come with emerging technology.
